The Seattle Times reported that Michael Boyer’s employers are denying his allegations that they fired him for buying marijuana.
Boyer is the first person to purchase marijuana legally in the state of Washington. He told KREM that his employers, Kodiak Security and Labor Ready, fired him after learning from media sources that he had purchase marijuana.
After allegedly being fired, Boyer posted his resume on Craigslist. KREM quotes Boyer as saying, “I lost my job to the news coverage of me being the FIRST PERSON TO BUY MARIJUANA LEGALLY IN SPOKANE! I regret nothing. But now im jobless and have decided to post my resume there. Thanks for reviewing it!”
Kym Ramey, the human resource manager for Kodiak Security, told Andy Mannis of the Seattle Times that Boyer “was never terminated” and that the company “never asked him” to take a drug test.
Ramey also said that she didn’t know why Boyer had made the allegations, but that she “really wish he would stop.”
Stacy Burke, spokeswoman for True Blue, admitted to Mannis that the company had asked Boyer to get tested for drugs.
However, she denies knowing why the company wanted Boyer to get tested. Boyer told KREM that one of his employers set Thursday as a deadline for him to take a drug test.
Burke told Mannis that the company would not fire someone for buying marijuana because it is legal in the state of Washington.
She said that an issue could arise if an employee was under the influence of drugs during work hours.
Burke pointed out that that doesn’t appear to be the case with Boyer. Boyer told Mannis that the media attention has led to True Blue offering him his job back with a full day’s pay.
Boyer also hinted that he is looking for work in the marijuana industry. Mannis quoted Boyer as saying, “Since I’ve been thrown in the spotlight I think I’d make a good employee with one of these operations. I think I’d be a good budtender.”
